David Rosenman was planning to get some work done and catch up on his social media one morning and took his daughter with him. They were heading to a coffee shop and she brought her crochet tools to keep herself occupied…but on the way over, she looked up at him and asked for something that he will never forget.
Daddy, can you not read the paper or doodle or check email today? Can we just be together?” I’m not trying to be melodramatic; that was her question. So today, we were together. She showed me her yarn project. I recalled the day she was born. We compared notes about whether or not couples at other tables were on “dates” (she likes to impersonate people on dates — resting her smiling face on her hand and practicing a starry-eyed stare). She told me about her friends and their hamsters. I watched her chew her breakfast sandwich and melted a little bit as I thought about how much I love her. I wished it hadn’t taken her past experience and her courageous reaching out for me to give her the attention she so wanted and needed.” He wrote.
At the end of their time, he went up to grab a few more snacks for the ride home. A woman took advantage of his absence and asked his daughter if she was there with her dad. When the little girl said ‘yes’ and pointed to him, the woman left a note face-down on the table.
Dad was stunned. He posted the note on Facebook and had a message of his own.
Please don’t wait for your child or other loved one to plead for your attention like mine did — he or she might not.”
Take the time to really pay attention to the things in life that matter the most. He could have spent his time replying to emails. Instead, he experienced a morning that he will cherish for the rest of his life.
