When people proclaim that they’re going to hike the Appalachian Trail, it is usually younger people who give it a go. The grueling journey is one of the longest footpahs in the world and is a real test for the limits of the human body. While completing the trail, large amounts of strength and even larger amounts of will are required…but these identical twins knew they could do it, and now they’re a viral sensation.
Sisters Elrose Couric and Sue Hollinger hiked the trail in short sections over the course of 14 years, and in the summer of 2016 they finally reached the end!
We wished we were daring enough or young enough to do a thru-hike. It would have saved lots of time, but we couldn’t.”
The secret to their success? Each night, they had a glass of red wine and cold pizza to keep their spirits high!
The pair hadn’t had time to bond in the past 30 years as their husbands didn’t like each other, but when they found themselves widowed within 2 years of each other, they decided that it was time to reconnect.
In 1995, they purchased a house together in the mountains and when the weather gets cold, they spend their time in Florida.
They began to get into the world of hiking by maintaining a section of the trail. They had wanted to walk the trail as young girls, but “girls didn’t do that sort of thing then,” so they decided to take it on.
They have broken bones, encountered both a bear and a suspected murderer, and seen friends perish on the journey, but they never gave up.
Our religion was being in the woods,” she said. “We love maintaining the trails and just being in the woods. It doesn’t matter how or when or why. Both of us were so lucky. We couldn’t have done it without each other.”
They celebrated…simply by resting from the grueling journey!
